No More Weekly Updates
My workload increased over the last two months, which means less time spent on XNA. In essence, I have to cut a hobby.
One particular hobby consumed more and more time each week, yet not increasing proportionately in “funness” - weekly updates. simply put, XNA has gotten big.
I enjoy keeping myself up to date about the XNA community, and I will keep reading lots of blogs. I just won’t blog about what I read. There will be no more weekly updates.
The spare time normally spent on weekly updates will from now on be split fifty-fifty between coding and my other hobbies, such as hiking, fishing, writing, and family. Yes, I have a life. (c:
On the upside, this means I should be able to get back to making tutorials. Although, with the increased workload, I doubt there will be one per week, like during last year.
If you still want to keep up with the XNA community, here are the best XNA news blogs:
- ZiggyWare - Michael Morton - Feed
- Do as I say, not as I do - Ultrahead - Feed
- The Z Buffer - Andy Dunn - Feed
- XBOX 360 Homebrew - Mark Coffman - Feed
- LearnXna - Gregory Wurm - Feed
- Mykres Space - Glenn Wilson - Feed
- Machaira’s Space - Jim Perry - Feed
Cheers!
Joran

“here are the best XNA news blogs”
I’m honored to be in your list … as you are in mine …
On one hand, it hurts losing this value-added resource, but on the other hand it’s completely understandable since most of the times responsibilities end up doing an agressive take over of our precious time, thus forcing us to reduce some activities in order to get by and or enjoy life.
Godspeed in your new “split”
Best regards,
UH

great shame ill admit, but if it means itll allow you to have time to devote to the tutorials mate then id have to say im all for it. ill admit that lately, ive been checking the site daily with a sense of dread, expecting to see a post from you saying you can no longer work on the tutorials…
i really really really hope that that day doesnt come, this is the best site on the whole of the web for me, and i hope you can continue for a long time to come.
all the best mate, martin

Ultrahead: “I’m honored to be in your list … as you are in mine”
Of course you’re on it! You and Michael are the two best ones which is why I put the two of you at the top of the list.
Hexx: “Sad to hear, I loved your XNA weekly updates.”
pugmartin: “great shame ill admit, but if it means itll allow you to have time to devote to the tutorials mate then id have to say im all for it.”
I was guessing that if it would have been the other way around - cut tutorials, to only do weekly updates - then there would be a lot more than three comments above this one…
Yes, the weekly updates were starting to get so big that they severely hampered the tutorials. I do believe that most people are for my decision.
I’m shooting some “extra scenes” for the next batch of tutorials today, and it does feel good to not have the feeling that those new-email/new post beeps from the internet-machine are something I must look at.
Cheers!

That’s some sad news.. your site really made it possible to stay up-to-date with all the news around XNA. But I completely understand you, if I didn’t have to sit on the train for 2 hours a day, I don’t know if I would find the time needed to maintain my site.
Enjoy your free time

Sorry to see this, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Thanks for the plug! I’ve been slacking a bit on my blog as I’ve been at the MS MVP Summit this week, but I’m going to start ramping up again.

come on people, show joran a bit of encouragement! theres been no posts on here lately, though i for one check the site at least once a day. joran, the lack of posts doesnt mean people arent interested! we`re all just sitting politely waiting (hoping?) for the next tutorial.
any update?

Thank you all for your encouraging thoughts! It does motivate.
I’d like to start by apologizing. I’m in a bit of a bind with work right now, which has taken much more time than anticipated. I’m sorry that my previous estimates of when I’ll be able to return to XnaTutorial.com have been so short. But, I promise I’ll get back to XnaTutorial.com.
When? I have two work-related projects to finish up, which will carry me into next month.
I have written the code and outlined the speech for the coming packs. I just haven’t found the time to shoot and edit them yet. Just wanted all of you to know that progress is being made.
Coming up:
First, I’ll introduce GameComponents, including procedurally generating textures. At least a tiny texture.
Next, the Game Object (sprites, triggers, etc) in an inheritance-based design. This will include an XML level file.
Then, a component-based redesign of the Game Object, to show you where the professional game developers are heading. Inheritance is so 1990s… (c:
That should take a few video packs to wrap up.
Since much of my time has been away from my development machine, I only have access to my lousy old laptop. From the previous millennium… This means text is easier for me while I finish up work, so I will probably have an article in the upcoming XNA magazine.
Cheers!
